Memorable Monday: Find “Shelter”

Can you believe that October is sprinting past us? Mom Karen, my Editorial Assistant, finds herself on this beautiful October day in more hot water than a peach at a canning convention.

My words to her: You must survive all of the dangerous bubbling around you because I, Lady Louise, am counting on you to handle the needs of my life. I’m pretty sure that my powers of persuasion were effective because you should have seen her sprinting for the shower when I pushed my cold nose against her face. She looked at me and the clock and was making that four-letter word “dash” across the room while uttering some four-letter words that I refuse to share. I am a lady as you know.

Therefore, we want to make you aware of the word “shelter,” meaning “a place giving temporary protection from bad weather or danger,” a “refuge or haven,” and “a place that provides food and protection for people or animals that need assistance.”

Each of these is a “fit” for October, which is Adopt a Shelter Dog Month. Many of you know that I was adopted from Carolina Poodle Rescue (CPR) in South Carolina. What you may not know is that I also spent time at the Charlotte Humane Society shelter before finding my way to CPR in the spring of 2008.

I know that many of you who follow my blog have adopted shelter dogs before or have shelter dogs in your home now that are truly delightful companion(s)!

And why are we, shelter dogs/shelter poodles, so perfect for you?

Well, we can help you lose that last 10 pounds or 50 or so that you’ve been trying to discard. We’ll be your fitness pal.

We will love you while you fetch our dinner, guard you when you’re oblivious to the world around you (we know that you’re forgetful and we gracefully accept it), and chew your shoes so that you’re able to buy newer and more fashionable ones or help a starving cobbler repair them.

You can count on us to encourage an afternoon nap when we’re resting nearby or to take a pre-dawn visit to the great outdoors so that you can see how beautiful the world is when bathed in moonlight.

We will help you gain a better understanding of the state of medicine in America by visiting the emergency room when your clumsiness causes you to trip over us while we’re resting in the doorway.

We’ll eat that food you left in our reach so that you’ll be saved those unwanted calories; we’ll exercise your patience so that your hostility level won’t be apparent to the other humans in your life, and we’ll mark our home with a unique yellow liquid to let everyone know that this house belongs to us!

We probably can be relied on, too, to help you select another “favorite” chair or sofa for sitting or reclining, thus ensuring that you have a different view of our home.

See how valuable we are! I’ll bet that you never realized the complete value of us shelter dogs.

But most of all, we will love you “until death do us part.” You can’t say that about a lot of humans in your life!

Add zest to your world by finding a dog to love this month, or any other month. We will change your lives!

And perk up your ears and open your eyes!

Big changes are under way for the blog.

Tune in on Tuesday to know more!
